Celebrating Hannakah and Christmas
December 21, 7 pm: A Paul Winter Solstice 2009 The holiday tradition continues with Paul Winter's Winter Solstice Celebration. A dynamic musical celebration in the extraordinary acoustics of the world’s largest Gothic cathedral - New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine - highlight the music of the Winter Consort with gospel singer Theresa Thomason, Brazilian singer/guitarist Renato Braz, and woodwind master Paul McCandless.
December 22, 7 pm: A Leroy Anderson Christmas Classic Christmas arrangements and original music by Leroy Anderson. Recorded performances of Leroy Anderson’s Christmas music, along with the composer himself talking about how he wrote some of his famous Christmas music and what Christmas means to him.
December 22, 8 pm: Lessons and Carols from the Washington National Cathedral The annual broadcast of the stirring Christmas service from National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. One of its most attended and cherished events of the year, the service combines biblical readings that chronicle the story Jesus' birth with age-old and all-new carols, from folk to ethereal polyphony.
December 23, 7 pm: St. Olaf Christmas Festival 2009 A service in song and word that has become one of the nation’s most cherished holiday celebrations. Hymns, carols, choral works, and orchestral selections celebrating the Nativity and featuring more than 500 student musicians who are members of five choirs and the St. Olaf Orchestra. December 24, 7 pm: Handel’s Messiah with the Pittsburg Symphony The holiday season is always a festive time of year at Heinz Hall. A tree is decorated in the grand hall, snow is falling outside, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs one of the season's musical delights. Under the baton of Resident Conductor Lawrence Loh, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and chorus perform the magnificent "Hallelujah Chorus," the jubilant "Ev'ry Valley," and the stirring "Amen." Soloists include Awet Andemicael, soprano; Margaret Lattimore, mezzo soprano; Robert Gardner, baritone; Alan Bennett, bass.
Christmas Day, 9 am: Christmas with Madrigalia 2009 O Magnum Mysterium is the traditional chant for Christmas morning. Its simple, yet elegant text has inspired composers through the ages to depict the great mystery of the King of Kings born among humble animals and shepherds. This year the Rochester, NY chamber choir Madrigalia returns for another musical celebration of Christmas, centered on the O Magnum Mysterium Mass by 16th century Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria.
Celebrating the New Year
December 31, 6 pm: The Capital Steps Join the witty (and sometimes snarky) Capitol Steps as they ring in 2010 by roasting 2009 with their annual awards ceremony and much more! All new categories: "Most Delicious Animal to Cause a Flu Pandemic," "Worst Reason to Be Invited for Beer at the White House," "Best Award of a Nobel Peace Prize to Someone Currently Involved in Two Wars" & "Loudest Town Hall Meeting." An hour-long year in review. Because you wouldn’t want to deal with 2009 only once.
December 31, TBD: Toast of the Nation Toast of the Nation is live music late night on New Year’s Eve, a holiday special for your party. Raise a glass with listeners and revelers coast to coast at locations across the continent. We’ll hear guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli’s tribute to Frank Sinatra at the Kennedy Center, The Bad Plus at New York’s famed Village Vanguard, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at an undisclosed location in the Mountain Time Zone and more.
January 1, 2010 9 am: New Year’s Day Live from Vienna Join us on New Year's Day 2010, for a sparkling celebration, live from the Golden Hall at the Musikverein in Vienna. The Vienna Philharmonic presents its annual New Year’s Day concert from Vienna, including your favorite waltzes and polkas, and so much more.
