Flagstaff, AZ – Prescott native Kris Mayes was elected chairwoman of the Arizona Corporation Commission earlier this week. The low-profile commission makes decisions about high-profile topics: everything from electric power rates to rural water supplies to securities regulation. Mayes, who's a Republican, told Arizona Public Radio's Daniel Kraker she'll continue the commission's emphasis on renewable energy.

Phoenix, AZ – Martin said the problem is Arizona is spending about $28 million a day while bringing in less than $23 million in taxes.

"It definitely is a path towards bankruptcy if there's no changes in spending. You can't ignore your bills forever. The state's done that for about a year and a half as revenues have continued to drop. Spending has gone the other direction," Martin said.

Flagstaff, AZ – After last month's historic presidential election, Arizona Senator John McCain is shifting gears, moving away from campaign-related issues and refocusing on the matters of Arizona. Senator McCain is currently on a media tour of his home state. He had intended to visit the KNAU studios in Flagstaff, but because of a scheduling glitch, Senator McCain spoke by phone with Arizona Public Radio's Gillian Ferris Kohl.

The problem has been widely reported: Each year, swaths of ranch and farmlands are sold for development, and there's no turning back.

Dave Jenner, a rancher in central Arizona's Yavapai County, didn't want to see that happen to his family's W Diamond Ranch near Skull Valley. In 2008, Jenner put more than 4,000 acres into an agricultural conservation easement.
