The Federal Communications Commission says it want to make it easier for more minorities to own television stations, and force broadcasters to air a minimum amount of local programming. But critics say that aim runs headlong into its push to allow more consolidation and cross-ownership of media companies. Earlier this month more than 60 Native American dancers from across North America converged on the Heard Museum in Phoenix for the annual world championship hoop dance contest. Part dance, part sport, part cultural showcase, the event drew more than 10,000 spectators. February 14, 2008 – Arizona's first hybrid electric buses are on Flagstaff's roadways. They're powered by an internal combustion engine and the GM Allison hybrid system. Flagstaff transportation officials say the buses are fuel efficient and quiet.

The historian and novelist, who died at age 84 in 1993, may have been referring to the Colorado Plateau, a place he dearly loved. But Stegner is often labeled the dean of western writers for good reason. He was raised in Montana, Utah, and Saskatchewan, and taught creative writing at Stanford University.
