Flagstaff, AZ – Five democrats and at least one republican have expressed interest in running for the CD-1 seat.

SHANKER: I think most of them would do a better job than Renzi as far as the democrats are concerned. Is it opportunistic? I don't know.

That's attorney Howard Shenker who declared his candidacy at the end of last month.

SHANKER: Whether he was indicted, whether he steps down, whether he runs I'm in this.

Kykotsmovi, AZ – Reggae music was born on the tropical island of Jamaica. But it's found an unlikely home away from home on the high desert mesas of the Hopi reservation. Over the past two decades more than 50 international reggae acts have made the long trek to Hopiland. The latest? Stephen Marley and Junior Gong, sons of the legendary Bob Marley. Flagstaff housing prices are increasing more quickly than in almost any other city in the country. The median price for a home is now over 400 thousand dollars. In part 2 of her series on the cost of housing, Arizona Public Radio's Theresa Bierer examines one option the city of Flagstaff is pursuing to make at least some houses more affordable.

According to Zillow dot com, Flagstaff and Yuma are in the top five cities in the nation when it comes to housing appreciation. So why are prices in Flagstaff still going through the roof, at a time when the real estate frenzy has subsided in other parts of the country? Flagstaff, AZ – In Ann Cummins debut novel Yellowcake we get to know two families - one white and one Navajo - three decades after the closing of a uranium mill that had a big impact on their lives. The title yellowcake is another word for processed uranium ore. Cummins spent much of her childhood on the Navajo reservation. And her father worked in the uranium mills. She told Arizona Public Radio's Laurel Morales it was his subsequent illness and death that prompted the book.

Flagstaff, AZ – Poet and hip hop artist Saul Williams believes there's power in words. In his most recent book The Dead Emcee Scrolls he writes about taking control of one's fate. This theme resonates in much of his work. In his critically acclaimed film Slam, Williams portrays a drug dealer who uses his poetry to change his fate and influence others caught in the cycle of crime. He recently told Arizona Public Radio's Laurel Morales growing up in Newburgh, New York, prepared him for the role.
