News and Operations
Daniel Kraker Director of News and Programming/Indian Country News Bureau Correspondent Dan began filing reports for KNAU from northern Arizona's Indian reservations in 2001, and now heads up KNAU's Indian Country News Bureau, which won a national UNITY award from the Radio and Television News Directors Association for coverage of diversity issues. Dan has collected awards for his reporting on the growing importance of the Native American vote, the long tradition of running on the Hopi reservation, and the search for the perfect swimming hole. He's also a National Murrow Award winner in radio documentary for his story on gay Native America for Outright Radio. Dan also writes regularly for publications including High Country News. When he's not exploring the canyons and mesas of the Four Corners with his wife Erin, daughters Mia and Lydia, and black lab Moe, Dan can often be found on Flagstaff's disc golf courses, mountain biking, and spending way too much time managing his fantasy football team.
Gillian Ferris Kohl Reporter/Morning Edition host Gillian came to KNAU in 2001 as a freelance reporter. Her first story won an Arizona Associated Press Award. Since then, Gillian has won numerous other AP Awards and several Edward R. Murrow Awards for writing, feature reporting and documentary work. She is also the local anchor of NPR’s Morning Edition. Gillian’s accolades aren’t limited to radio journalism. In 1975, she won a 10-speed bike for being named the Winchell’s Donut Artist of the Year. Gillian is also the San Diego County Cup Soccer Champion of 1978.
Laurel Morales Reporter Laurel Morales is an award-winning reporter on KNAU Arizona Public Radio. At a young age she often alerted her parents of her older siblings mischief and became known as the informer. She decided to follow her calling after interning at Mother Jones Magazine and KQED in San Francisco. She received her master's degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism then covered education for the Elgin Courier News. Laurel returned to radio as a Mainstreet reporter at Minnesota Public Radio. She strives to find the unheard voice and tell all sides of the story. As a journalist she loves meeting people from all walks of life and feels privileged to help them tell their stories.
Theresa Bierer Announcer/Reporter Theresa Bierer started at KNAU in 1995. She hosted All Things Considered and Morning Edition until 1997 when her first child was born. Today, she works as a reporter and an on-air host when other people are on assignment. Theresa enjoyed working with students as a full time faculty member in NAU’s School of Communication but found she longed to spend more time reporting. Her career began in 1980 as a high school TV news anchor. Theresa's first paid job started in 1983 at Flagstaff's KCLS Radio. She did TV News in Oregon, Minnesota, South Dakota & Wisconsin before returning to Arizona.
Anne Crosman All Things Considered Host Anne Crosman of Sedona is an author, newspaper columnist, teacher, former magazine columnist, and former correspondent for CBS, NBC, and Mutual Radio Network News. Her book "Young at Heart: Aging Gracefully with Attitude" won a Benjamin Franklin Award and is in its third printing. Anne is vice-chair of the Sedona OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute), where she teaches memoir-writing. She has free-lanced for Monitor Radio, The Christian Science Monitor, AP Radio, Voice of America, The Washington Post, Newsweek, and Washington (DC) Magazine.
Katelyn Seabury Web Editor/Social Media/Traffic/News Katelyn graduated from Northern Arizona University in May 2009 with a degree in Journalism. She interned at KNAU for two years before being hired. In her college career, Katelyn was Managing Editor of The Lumberjack, NAU's student newspaper and also started radio news programming at KJACK, NAU's student radio station. Katelyn has been in love with journalism since high school and was named the 2005 Arizona Newspaper Association High School Journalist of the Year. She has an affinity for public radio, technology, cooking, literary journals, and traveling.
Brian Sanders Network Operations Manager
Brian is a 33-year
broadcast veteran. His previous positions include Morning Edition host
at KCRW in Santa Monica, remote engineer for LA's top-rated 94.7 The Wave,
Program Director at KUNV and Senior Producer at KNPR, both in Las Vegas. His
classical music recordings have been heard on Performance Today and he
recorded and produced the internationally award-winning public radio series Four
Queens Jazz Night from Las Vegas for nearly its entire 12-year run. He's
particularly proud of audio tours he produced for the J. Paul Getty Museum and
for the Henry E. Huntington Art Gallery, both located in southern
California. Outside of radio, he's played saxophone for Joe Williams,
Frank Sinatra Jr., Bob Hope, The Temptations, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, and
Wayne Newton. He can land an airplane in instrument conditions and will remind you
that Hall of Fame first baseman Ernie "Mr Cub" Banks wore uniform number 14
(retired).
Administration and Development
John Stark General Manager John has been KNAU's general manager since September 1993, transforming KNAU into the thirteen-station Arizona Public Radio network. Stark was named Public Radio General Manager of the Year in 2000. He creates projects such as Poverty with a View, Edge of the Rez, and Commitment to Localism. In 2007 he was elected to the NPR Board of Directors for a second three-year term. Prior to arriving in northern Arizona, Stark programmed and reported for public radio stations in Las Vegas, Boulder, Fresno and Denver and worked at NPR in Washington. He chairs the Grand Canyon Association board of directors and frequently hikes the Canyon's backcountry. He resides in Flagstaff with wife Kris.
Annie Kuchler Assistant General Manager/Finance Director Annie has broad experience in public accounting, local government, non-profit corporations and private business management. A devoted public radio fan for several decades, she joined the station in 2003 and feels privileged to work alongside the talented and dedicated crew at KNAU.
Liz Gumerman Development Director Liz joined KNAU in July 2007 and brings with her a passion for KNAU and NPR. She loves sharing that passion for KNAU and working with listeners, while helping to build a strong financial base for Arizona Public Radio. Liz has been immersed in the field of philanthropy since the mid-1990s and, before joining KNAU, most recently worked with the Museum of Northern Arizona. She has worked with volunteers, docents, and donors and has developed fundraising events and initiatives. She is the proud mom of two Junior Olympic skiers and her husband, Wolf, is Chair of the NAU Anthropology Department.
Elta Foster Membership Manager Elta started working in the KNAU membership department in 1995. Since then, Elta has built a relationship with most of KNAU's near 4,000 members. She manages the membership database, direct-mail solicitations, coordinates pledge drive volunteers, and on-air fundraising. She was raised on the Navajo Reservation in Leupp. Elta is also a rug weaver and enjoys spending time with her family.
Shelly's 21-year career in broadcasting began in Flagstaff
in the late 1980's. After graduating from NAU, she spent more than a
decade working at Channel 2 - Flagstaff's NBC Affiliate - a reporter, news
director, and ultimately, general manager. In 2000, she moved to Los
Angeles, to become Lead Writer for the KNBC. From there, she continued
her career producing and writing news in both the San Francisco area, and in
Phoenix. In 2007, she returned to Flagstaff, joining KNAU in July of that
year. When not working, Shelly enjoys writing, creating metal art,
jewelry, refurbishing old houses, and spending time with family and friends.
Cory Sheeley Underwriting Representative Cory grew up in Flagstaff, backpacking the Grand Canyon, floating the Colorado River, and sharing her love for the outdoors as a wilderness guide for many years. She hung up her hiking boots momentarily to earn a degree in Advertising and English from NAU. Since graduating Cory spent several years in Non-Profit and in Publishing, blending her outdoor knowledge into the business environment. Cory is excited to have joined the underwriting team at KNAU. In her free time she enjoys running races, climbing 14ners and traveling.
