Grand Canyon National Park is closing a scenic road to a North Rim vista and two trails because of a lightning-caused wildfire that has grown to 3.5 square miles (9 square kilometers).

A newly authorized project calls for forest thinning and prescribed fires to protect watersheds that feed a reservoir serving the city of Payson in east-central Arizona.

Crews with the Coconino National Forest continue to manage several lightning-caused wildfires in the region with the onset of monsoon season. The Seep Fire is burning woody debris near Kendrick Park north of Flagstaff and has grown to 2,300 acres. Twenty-five personnel are keeping the blaze within containment lines.

The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross will be deploying four volunteers to Northern California shelters to help residents displaced by the ongoing wildfire.
