Sky Harbor Flight Information

Flagstaff AZ – Flights at Sky Harbor were severely curtailed Thursday afternoon because of high winds from a winter storm that dumped heavy rain and deep snow on much of Arizona and California.

But airport communications center supervisor Kris Commerford says normal airport operations resumed late Thursday night with major carriers arriving and taking off.

Southwest Airlines canceled all arriving and departing flights at Sky Harbor on Thursday afternoon and also canceled flights in Tucson, Ariz., and at Southern California airports.

Delay in payment from state causes university system trouble

Flagstaff, AZ – The Arizona Board of Regents drafted a letter to send to Governor Jan Brewer today that states the Arizona University system cannot function if the state continues to defer payments.

Last month the state was unable to pay the universities their monthly installment of about 75 million dollars from its general fund. This usually results in double payment the following month.

APS rate increase maximizes energy savings

Flagstaff, AZ – APS will have to reduce the amount of energy it uses and increase its' use of renewable energy sources. This is expected to produce more than 20 percent energy savings over the next ten years.

By 2015 Arizonans will be using 1.7 million mega watt hours from renewable sources, nearly double what is being used now.

Kristin Mayes, Arizona Corporations Commission Chairwoman says the measure will put Arizona on the right track to advance sustainable efforts while also offering benefits to APS customers.

Navajos vote to cut council size

Flagstaff, AZ – Navajo people voted overwhelmingly yesterday to drastically reduce the size of the tribal council, and to give their president line item veto authority. It was the first time ballot initiatives have ever been brought directly to tribal members.

Navajos to decide whether to reduce size of tribal council

Flagstaff, AZ – Voters on the Navajo Nation will decide tomorrow (today) whether to drastically reduce the size of their legislative branch, and whether to grant the tribe's president line item veto power. The election has sharply divided people on the country's largest Indian reservation. Arizona Public Radio's Daniel Kraker reports.

Grand Canyon to See More High Flows

Flagstaff, AZ – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today (yesterday) that there will be additional high flow experiments conducted at Glen Canyon Dam. The artificial floods are designed to rebuild sandbars and beaches along the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

The last high flow experiment was held in March of 2008. Two jet tubes at the base of the gigantic dam were opened for two and a half days, releasing 300 thousand gallons of water per second.

Hopi elect new Chairman and Vice Chair

Flagstaff, AZ – For the first time in nearly a year, the Hopi Tribe will have a Chairman and Vice Chairman.

Leroy Shingoitewa was elected the new chairman of the Hopi tribe Wednesday. The 67 year old principal at Moencopi Day School near Tuba City received just over one thousand votes, nearly twice as many as runner up Clark Tenakhongva. Herman Honanie, current Director of Health Services for the Hopi Tribe, was elected vice chairman.
