Fyfe Dangerfield On World Cafe

As the founder and frontman of Guillemots, Fyfe Dangerfield has earned a reputation for crafting bright, off-kilter indie rock. On his debut solo album, Fly Yellow Moon, he treads familiar ground, but with a greater focus on direct pop songwriting.

Dangerfield formed Guillemots in 2004 while working as a professor of music at Cranbrook College in Essex, England. The band's debut album, 2006's Through the Windowpane, earned Guillemots a nomination for the 2006 Mercury Prize, an annual award given to new British artists. Although the group is still working together — rumors of a third album have already begun to circulate — Dangerfield took time out recently to put together his solo debut. Similarities abound between Fly Yellow Moon and his output with Guillemots, but Dangerfield's solo work is also strongly influenced by 1970s pop singer-songwriters, and the album is filled with exuberant, wide-eyed love songs. In this World Cafe session for WXPN, Dangerfield plays songs from the new record.
