Did The Emergency Alert System Test Pass Muster?

RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

This is only a test.

MONTAGNE: And good thing, because if the first nationwide test yesterday of the Emergency Alert System had been a real alert, some Americans would not have known there was an emergency. Instead of that irritating high-pitched tone interrupting television and radio programming, some heard Lady Gaga singing "Paparazzi." Others had their programming switched to QVC, the home shopping channel. It's MORNING EDITION. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
