SRP to Determine Fate of NGS

High Country News

Representatives with the Salt River Project say they’ll vote Monday on the future of the Navajo Generating Station near Page.

SRP has been considering closing the coal-fired power plant due to the lower cost of natural gas. Navajo and Hopi officials are against the closure saying it’s important to the regional economy. Arizona Corporation Commissioner Andy Tobin is pushing for NGS to stay open also citing economic reasons.
