New Submarine Will Be Named 'USS Arizona'

Wiki Commons

There will again be an active military ship bearing the name USS Arizona.

The Navy announced one of its two newest fast-attack nuclear submarines will carry the state's name.

The original USS Arizona was a battleship that was sunk during a surprise attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killing 1,177 crewmembers.

The recent interment of a survivor marked the final time a soldier who survived the attack will be laid to rest at the sight where the remains of the ship rest.

The other new submarine will be named the USS Oklahoma, sharing the name of another battleship that was sunk in the attack on Pearl Harbor, killing 429 of its crewmembers.
