Mexico's President Outlines Goals For 2020 In New Year Speech

pbs.org

Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says that imprisoned drug kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán had had the same power as the country's president.

In a video message New Year's Eve from the southern city of Palenque, López Obrador recounted his administration's successes in its first year and highlighted its challenges.

He says his administration will keep criminals and authorities apart, unlike previous governments in Mexico. It appeared to be a reference to the arrest last month of former public safety secretary Genaro García Luna who U.S. prosecutors say accepted millions of dollars in bribes from the Sinaloa cartel.
