Play Us A Tune: Geologic Time

Dawn Kish Photo and Film

During this time of separation and social distancing, there is one thing that can unite nearly all humans on the planet…music.  Julie Sullivan Brace has been on the Flagstaff music scene for 30 years.  An accomplished guitarist and songwriter, she is also a long-time creative force behind the annual Pickin in the Pines Bluegrass and Acoustic Music Festival, and last year Julie launched an adult summer music camp.  This year, of course, things are very different in the world of live music, and only time will tell how in-person concerts will look in the future.  In this week’s segment of Play Us a Tune, Julie Sullivan Brace brings us an original song about the passage of time and all that comes with it. It’s called Geology.

JSB: It’s been really hard to not get to play music with people because it’s such a healing, nourishing activity. So, I’ve been playing a lot of music alone.

I’ve been in Flagstaff for 30 years, and I’ve always been involved with music; working on musical things, promoting musicians, supporting musicians and playing music myself, performing with lots of different people and always promoting musicians in small concerts coming through town.

My most recent venture was to start Roots and Boots Music Camp for Adults last year. We had a great time playing music out in the woods. Of course, I’ve just agonized about whether or not to have the camp again this year, and finally decided that I would go forward and have this camp. I figured out a way to do it safely, but then all those questions came back in and clouded my brain with what’s right, what’s wrong, how should we move forward?

This song I want to sing…I thought it would be a good one for this time. It’s called Geology.
