Officials with Grand Canyon National Park say they tentatively plan to reopen the park’s eastern entrance in late May.
Park officials closed the east entrance last year in an effort to help the neighboring Navajo Nation help slow the transmission of the coronavirus. With the current slowing of the outbreak, the tribe is reopening some of its own facilities. Grand Canyon officials say May 21st is the tentative date for reopening the park's eastern entrance, considering health benchmarks and other factors are met. Some residents in Page would like to see an earlier reopening. The city is small and tourist-dependent. Campsites and other facilities have been vacant since the pandemic forced the shut down national parks and recreation areas.
