A prescribed burn being conducted by Coconino National Forest crews on Mon, Dec. 6, 2021 is producing smoke that can be seen from Flagstaff. This photo was taken near Elden Lookout Road.

Fire crews on the Coconino National Forest are conducting a prescribed burn south of Flagstaff Monday.

They ignited nearly 270 acres near Mountainaire just south of Forest Road 714 in an effort to protect private property that’s particularly vulnerable to wildfire.

Smoke is visible from the Flagstaff metropolitan area and forest officials say it’s expected to travel along prevailing winds potentially impacting residents in the city.

Cooler nighttime temperatures could cause the smoke to settle down into lower lying areas along interstates 17 and 40 as well as the Highway 89 and Lake Mary Road corridors lasting up to a day or two after the burn.
