Arizona Lawmakers Debate School Voucher Bill For Navajo Students

goodnewsnetwork.org

Republican Arizona lawmakers have advanced a bill that would provide a permanent fix for Navajo Nation students who use the state's school voucher program to attend a New Mexico Christian school.

But the proposal raised the ire of voucher opponents and Democrats who call it a massive expansion that will allow students on reservations statewide to use vouchers in out-of-state schools.

Republican Senator Sylvia Allen of Snowflake called her legislation a narrow fix focused on the handful of children attending a school across the state border from Window Rock, Arizona.

Opponents called it a dangerous precedent.
