Coconino High School in Flagstaff has been named an International Baccalaureate Organization. The designation allows the school to offer rigorous college preparatory classes beginning next school year.
Eighteen students so far have registered for the program at Coconino High and nearly 40 will take at least one IBO class.
“This program is different from our current offerings as the curriculum is designed to be interdisciplinary and promote connections between all of the subjects,” said Coconino High School IB Coordinator and teacher Chelsea Drey in a press release. “As a teacher, I am excited that my students are going to be able to use this curriculum to participate in a learning community focused on connecting local educational opportunities with a global perspective all while preparing them for success upon graduation.”
Coconino High is the only Flagstaff Unified School District school so far to receive the designation. FUSD’s Puente de Hozho and Sinagua Middle School are working toward becoming IBO schools. In total, Arizona has 19 International Baccalaureate programs. IBO is based in Switzerland and includes 5,000 schools in 140 countries.
Meanwhile, Flagstaff High School has been recognized for student counseling. The American School Counselor Association has designated the school as a model program for focusing on social and emotional development as well as academic achievement and career planning.
More than 900 schools have received the ASCA designation and Flag High is one of five in Arizona to be recognized. The school’s counseling department will be honored at a ceremony in Seattle in June.
