Officials with Glen Canyon National Recreational Area will close all public boat ramps on Lake Powell to limit the spread of coronavirus.

They say the ramps can’t be operated while practicing physical distancing, and area authorities are following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to protect visitors and employees.

Under the order, shore-based swimming and recreation is still allowed. Officials also say the closure is meant to limit the spread of invasive quagga mussels to other bodies of water. The order goes into effect at 5 p.m. Monday and will remain until Utah Governor Gary Herbert lifts the state’s stay-at-home order or when officials determine ramps can be operated safely.

Owners of boats moored at marinas can still access their vessels but voyaging outside of the marinas is prohibited because of the suspension of visitor and recreation services.
