Republican U.S. Sen. Martha McSally has conceded the race to her Democratic opponent, retired astronaut Mark Kelly.
The AP and several other media organizations called the race more than a week ago, but McSally hadn’t yet conceded. In a statement, McSally says she called Kelly this morning to congratulate him and offer support during the transition.
"It has been an absolute honor to fight for and serve Arizona in the U.S. Senate, especially during these unprecedented times," she said.
The concession ends a contentious and lengthy fight to fill the remaining two years of John McCain’s final term. The longtime Arizona senator died in 2018 and Gov. Doug Ducey appointed McSally to his Senate seat until this year’s election.
Kelly could be sworn in as soon as Nov. 30.
