Navajo Nation leaders are calling for a congressional investigation into the recent deaths of two Navajo tribal members at the Fort Hood Army Base in Texas.
Pvt. Carlton L. Chee collapsed during training and died last week at a hospital, and Army Spc. Miguel D. Yazzie died at the base in July.
Pres. Jonathan Nez says the men’s families haven’t received adequate information about the incidents and calls the lack of communication from military officials “troubling.”
“On behalf of the Navajo Nation, we offer our thoughts and prayers for the families of Pvt. Chee and Spc. Yazzie," says Nez. "We spoke with the families of Pvt. Chee and Spc. Yazzie and they have many concerns and questions related to inconsistent information and details provided by military officials."
According to Nez’s office, the families suspect foul play could have contributed to the deaths. Officials say 28 military members have died at Fort Hood so far this year.
