Navajo Nation COVID-19 Cases Continue To Decline

AP

The Navajo Nation continues to record new cases of coronavirus but overall numbers are still declining on the reservation.

The tribe reported 27 additional infections and one more death Tuesday. The Navajo Nation in May had the highest infection rate in the country, but leaders say lockdowns, mask requirements and other measures have brought cases down. More than 5,600 people there have now recovered from the disease. Stay-at-home orders remain in effect on the reservation.

The Navajo Nation has reported 7,941 total known cases and 379 deaths since the pandemic began.

In addition, tribal officials are debating how to spend more than $660 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding allocated to the tribe. They’ve already approved $60 million for first responders and other costs related to reopening the tribe’s government.
