Navajo Nation health officials have reported 23 new know cases of COVID-19 and one more death.
Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez says though there’s been recent infection declines in Utah, New Mexico and Arizona, officials are still concerned about the spread of new variants of the virus. He urges residents of the reservation to continue to physically distance and follow safety guidelines.
President Joe Biden, meanwhile, recently signed a long-awaited major disaster declaration for the Navajo Nation that’ll provide additional federal resources for the tribe as it continues to grapple with the pandemic. Navajo leaders have also extended the tribe’s stay-at-home order.
Nearly 29,000 people on the Navajo Nation have tested positive for COVID and 1,057 have died since the pandemic began.
