Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez has finalized a subgrant agreement to extend power lines to nearly two-dozen homes in the community of Tonalea.
The deal with the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority will provide long-awaited electricity to 23 families. Several residents scheduled to receive electicity attended a signing of the agreement Saturday for the homes located in what’s known as the former Bennett Freeze area, where many basic home improvements were prohibited by the federal government for decades amid a land dispute.
Local resident Selena Slim says she's has lived in Tonalea her entire life without electricity and regularly spends $75 on gasoline for her generator to provide electric power for her home.
