Prescott National Forest To Enact Closures For Peregrine Falcon Nesting

National Park Service

Prescott National Forest officials say they will soon close cliff faces on Granite Mountain and Thumb Butte ahead of the peregrine falcon nesting season.

Granite Mountain's rock cliff face and the rim above the face will be off limits, while the north and south climbing faces of Thumb Butte along with areas at the base of the faces will be off limits.

The closures go into effect February 3, and are scheduled to last through mid-July.

The forest says the closure will not affect Thumb Butte's Trail 33 or Trail 261 in the Granite Basin Recreation area.

The sites, which are frequented by rock climbers, have been popular nesting areas for the once-endangered bird for more than two decades.
