sedonaaz.gov

Sedona Police Department has identified the man who was shot and killed by officers Monday as 41-year-old David Messare.

According to a release from the city, Messare is originally from Oregon and moved to Sedona in the summer of 2019.

The incident took place in the 50-block of Newcastle Lane. The release did not offer new details on the incident.

A previous release said Messare was allegedly armed with a machete at the time he was killed, and that a caller said he was possibly cutting himself with the machete.

Sedona PD says the two officers involved in the shooting were Sgt. Casey Pelletier and Officer William Hunt, who have eight and 14 years of experience with the department respectively. Both are on paid leave per department protocol.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the shooting, and officials say more information will be released as it is available.

A city official says Sedona Police do not wear body cameras, and footage from an in-car camera has been given to DPS.
