The Arizona Senate has rejected legislation that would have allowed concealed-weapons permit holders to carry guns in many public buildings.
Tuesday's vote marks the latest failure for the proposal, which was voted down in 2015 and 2016 and vetoed three times by former Gov. Jan Brewer.
Fountain Hills Republican Sen. John Kavanagh's proposal failed on a 14-16 vote. Three Republicans joined all Democrats in opposing Senate Bill 1243.
Kavanagh says he won't seek another vote using a procedural move because the votes aren't there.
The measure would have required operators of public establishments to allow permit-holders to carry their firearms unless their buildings have security guards and metal detectors at their entrances.
The Senate passed two other bills expanding gun rights.
