Transportation Board Approves Interstate 17 Expansion

The state Transportation Board has approved a five-year highway construction program that includes dozens of major projects, including expanding part of Interstate 17 north of metro Phoenix.

The I-17 project will add lanes between Anthem and Sunset Point, a stretch of highway in rugged terrain where wrecks can create long traffic backups.

Projects were announced Friday.

They include improving State Route 189. Trucks hauling produce and other goods through Nogales to and from Mexico use the southern Arizona freight route.

Phoenix-area projects include building the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway partly circling the city. Tucson-area projects include widening Interstate 10 between Ina and Ruthrauff roads and building and reconstructing several I-10 interchanges.

Rural-area projects include expanding U.S. 93 near Wickenburg and Wikieup and widening State Route 260 in Star Valley.
