The mayor of Williams has announced he will be a Republican candidate for Arizona’s 1st congressional district that stretches from the northern Arizona community of Fredonia south to the outskirts of Tucson.

John W. Moore has served as Mayor of Williams for 12 years.  Moore is a business leader who has experience with retail, restaurant and hotel ownership.

Moore said in a written news release that he was instrumental in bringing the scenic tour Grand Canyon Railway to Williams more than 30 years ago.

He said he’s a strong defender of the second amendment for responsible gun owners and would work to improve the quality of public education and ensure college tuition is affordable.

According to Ballotpedia, there are three other republicans currently running in the primary for the first district. They are Nolan Reidhead, Tiffany Shedd and Chris Taylor.

There are currently four democrats: Barbara McGuire, Eva Putzova, Larry Williams and incumbent Democratic Congressman Tom O’Halleran.
