Former Uranium Mines On Navajo Nation Up For Assessments

Officials from the Navajo Nation and the federal government are taking a closer look at more than a dozen former uranium mines on the reservation.  The tribe and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reached an agreement years ago to assess sites where they haven’t found a mining company that would be responsible for the work.

About a quarter of Navajo women and some infants who were part of a federally funded study on uranium exposure had high levels of the radioactive metal in their systems, decades after mining for Cold War weaponry ended on their reservation, a U.S. health official Monday.
