It’s Tuesday, July 13. State flags will fly at half-staff today to commemorate Jeff Piechura and Matthew Miller — the two men died in a plane crash Saturday while fighting a fire near Wikieup. The Cedar Basin Fire is now 75% contained.

Coconino National Forest

6 p.m. UPDATE: The Gila County Sheriff's Office has issued evacuation orders for the comunities of Pine, Strawberry and Hunts Ranch as the fire has moved across Fossil Creek. An evacuation center has been opened at Rim Country Middle School. State Route 260 has been closed between Camp Verde and SR 87. 

A wildfire reported Wednesday night near Fossil Creek has grown to 6,000 acres with no containment. The blaze forced the evacuation of campers but officials say it isn’t currently threatening any local communities. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports.


Tonto National Forest

The massive Telegraph Fire east of Phoenix has grown to more than 170,000 acres. Crews, however, have made steady progress in recent days and report more than 70% containment. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports.

Smoke will be visible for days or possibly weeks in south-central Arizona where crews continue to strengthen the perimeter around a wildfire.

Nearly 1,000 firefighters focused Sunday on monitoring and mopping up the fire lines around the blaze south of Superior.

Fire officials say the Telegraph Fire, which has burned nearly 138 square miles (357 square kilometers), is 76% contained.
