As wildfires choke California and other Western states, the Trump administration pledged Thursday to work more closely with state and local officials to prevent wildfires from ever starting.

The Mohave County Board of Supervisors is concerned some water rights to the Colorado River could be transferred elsewhere under a plan by western Arizona farmers. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports, the board is calling on federal and state officials to intervene.

The Cochise County Board of Supervisors is requesting more federal funding for Mexican wolf recovery efforts.

According to a recent letter from the U.S. Interior Department, the Central Arizona Project may be required by law to continue purchasing power from the Navajo Generating Station. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports, NGS is slated to close next year unless a buyer is found.

More than 300 Navajo Generating Station employees, relatives and union and tribal leaders rallied in Phoenix on Wednesday to request a 90-day pause in steps to close the plant by the end of 2019 as scheduled.
