The National Park Service is holding a public comment period regarding the management of a bison herd on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. As Arizona Public Radio’s Ryan Heinsius reports, some wildlife advocacy groups are pushing for the animals to remain in the park.

As highways, cities, canals and railroads continue to be built across the West, some natural landscapes are becoming fragmented into patches, too small to support populations of certain animals.

Across the Southwest more and more bears have shown up in people’s kitchens, garages and flower beds. Wildlife officials in Colorado say in that state alone they had to euthanize 133 “problem bears” last year. And in Arizona at least a dozen bears have been euthanized, and scores of sightings have many people rattled.
