The federal government and private landowners in Utah have struck a deal that will allow protections for an iconic trail in Zion National Park.
The owners of a portion of the Zion Narrows Trail agreed to allow a conservation easement on the property for $1.5 million dollars. The Salt Lake Tribune reports the deal hit an impasse last year after a lowball offer from the federal government. The deal was orchestrated by the non-profit Trust for Public Land. Zion limits the number of daily hikers on the 16-mile trail, which traverses through narrow canyons, some 1,000 feet deep.
