Navajo Nation To Use COVID-19 Relief Funds For Schools

NavajoNationCouncil.org

The Navajo Nation government has presented a proposal to use COVID-19 relief funds for tribal schools.

Portions of the tribe’s CARES Act funding will go to implement virtual learning platforms to replace in-person instruction. The proposal includes $94 million for telecommunication and broadband internet development, and $45 million for college student relief. Additional monies will go to Head Start centers, teacher development, and the Department of Diné Education. Preliminary survey results show a majority of parents on the Navajo Nation support virtual learning for the safety of the children. Sixty-five schools on the Navajo Nation will remain closed until at least September 16 due to the pandemic.
