UPDATE: Fire crews said Monday night they had stopped forward progress of the Pumpkin Fire, which grew to 175 acres. There'e no word on containment. According to state Forestry officials, the fire started on private property and was human caused.
State fire managers say a 50-acre wildfire near the Tonto Basin has forced evacuations and is threatening structures.
According to the Department of Forestry and Fire Management, the Pumpkin Fire is being pushed by gusty winds northwest of Roosevelt Lake.
The Gila County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t said exactly how many residences have been evacuated. In addition, the Arizona Department of Transportation has closed State Route 188 near Punkin Center because of heavy smoke.
Tonto National Forest rangers have responded to the fire along with hand crews and fire engines.
