The Vanity Project, from Steven Page

The Vanity Project is the first solo effort by Steven Page, one of the frontmen of the wildly successful Canadian folk-pop band Barenaked Ladies. The self-titled album is something of a departure from the band's more frenetic sound.

For the project, Page worked with a hero from his teenage days, musician Stephen Duffy. A cult rock star in Great Britain, Duffy was a leader of the group The Lilac Time.

The two wrote most of the 12 tracks on The Vanity Project together. They constructed a mix of earnest, structured pop and witty lyrics -- from the political bent of "Wilted Rose" to the more personal "So Young So Wrong So Long."
