Willy Porter: Sparkling Folk Goes Grassroots

Willy Porter.
Willy Porter.

One of the artists at the forefront of the modern folk-music scene, Willy Porter began his career by selling copies of his debut album out of the trunk of his car in 1990. Since then, Porter has juggled labels and flirted with mainstream success, but his music has remained consistently compelling. After touring with the likes of Tori Amos, Paul Simon, Sting, Jeff Beck and the Cranberries, the Milwaukee-based singer-songwriter remains a live draw and a cult favorite.

At the end of last year, frustration with the music industry led Porter to start his own label (Weasel Records), which recently released his latest album, the characteristically sparkling Available Light.
