Sam Amidon On World Cafe

Sam Amidon, who also goes by the name samamidon, was born in Brattleboro, Vt., to a family of musicians. Throughout the course of his career, he's contributed to a number of independent projects, including Doveman, Assembly and Stars Like Fleas, though he's no stranger to solo projects. Amidon has released a total of five solo albums, including But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted, which features interpretations of old Appalachian folk songs. Several albums later, Amidon continues his experimentation with traditional folk music, bringing it to a modern audience.

Working with composer Nico Muhly, Amidon has taken an experimental approach on his latest album, I See the Sign. In a session from World Cafe, Amidon's interpretations feel relaxed and intimate, but also far-reaching in their ambitions.
