Encyclopaedia Britannica Goes All-Digital

RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:

NPR's business news start with end of an era.

Encyclopedia Britannica says it will no loner publish annual print editions of its 32-volume reference set. That ends a 244 year run. The company says online subscriptions now account for 15 times more revenue each year than sales of the book. The last print edition sold only 8,000 copies at just under $1,400 a set. While online, the company claims it can reach an audience of 100 million people.

For those who love the feel of paper and an unchanging world, Encyclopedia Britannica is still selling its last 4,000 sets of books until they're gone. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
