Join the NAU History Department to celebrate the release of Foster Chamberlin’s book: Uncivil Guard: Policing, Military Culture, and the Coming of the Spanish Civil War. His work traces the history of Spain's largest police force, the Civil Guard, from its foundation in 1844 through the country's turbulent Second Republic (1931-1936). Chamberlin uses case studies of political violence involving the Civil Guard and argues that the force's rigid military culture of honor accentuated the violence of the Second Republic, pushing the country closer to civil war.
