Lecture Series – When the Guns Went Quiet: WWII, 80 Years Later

As we mark 80 years since the end of World War II, this special program invites the community to reflect on the global journey toward peace and the lasting impact of those who served. This 80th anniversary program offers a global yet personal look at the war’s closing chapters in Europe, the Pacific, and North Africa, while examining the challenges faced by veterans as they returned to civilian life. In this talk, Robin LaCorte explores the final chapters of the war in Europe, the Pacific, and North Africa, while honoring the experiences of local veterans who returned home to help shape the future of Arizona. Their stories remind us that history lives on—not only in textbooks, but in the memories of our neighbors, families, and friends.

The talk features stories from local WWII veterans whose service left lasting marks on Arizona and the local community of Prescott.

Robin LaCorte holds a bachelor’s degree in education, and a master’s degree in World War II studies, completed in partnership with the National World War II Museum. She currently serves as the Holocaust Education Program Coordinator at the Martin-Springer Institute at Northern Arizona University. Robin’s passion for studying World War II is deeply personal. As the daughter and granddaughter of three WWII veterans and one Rosie the Riveter, she grew up hearing stories of service, sacrifice, and resilience. This rich personal history, combined with her lifelong commitment to preserving the memory of the past, drives her work to ensure that stories of courage, resistance, and survival continue to inspire future generations.
