'Lucia di Lammermoor' Met Opera Encore
'Lucia di Lammermoor' Met Opera Encore
The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the summer encore of the Met Opera’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” (from the 2021-22 season) on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre.
Soprano Nadine Sierra takes on one of the repertory’s most formidable and storied roles, the haunted heroine of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor”, in an electrifying new staging by Australian theater and film director Simon Stone, conducted by Riccardo Frizza. Tenor Javier Camarena adds to the bel canto fireworks as Lucia’s beloved, Edgardo, with baritone Artur Rucinski as her overbearing brother, Enrico, and bass Matthew Rose as her tutor, Raimondo.
ACT I
Having fallen on hard times, Enrico has arranged an advantageous marriage for Lucia, but Normanno reveals that she is in love with Enrico’s enemy Edgardo. Lucia and Alisa wait for Edgardo. When he arrives, he explains that he must leave on a political mission, and they exchange vows of devotion.
ACT II
Normanno has procured forged evidence that indicates that Edgardo is involved with another woman. When Enrico shows it to Lucia, she is heartbroken and eventually agrees to marry Arturo. Just as she signs the marriage contract, Edgardo bursts in. Outraged, he curses Lucia and tears his ring from her finger, leaving her despairing.
ACT III
Enrico visits Edgardo and challenges him to a duel at dawn. Raimondo interrupts the wedding party with the news that Lucia has gone mad and killed Arturo. Lucia enters, covered in blood. Enrico arrives and realizes that she has lost her senses, and she collapses. While Edgardo awaits Enrico, guests coming from the wedding tell him that Lucia has died. Determined to join Lucia in Heaven, Edgardo kills himself.
