Lysistrata was written by Aristophanes, with translation and adaptation by Carolyn Balducci
Directed by Nathanael Johnson
Originally performed in 411 BCE, Aristophanes’ comic masterpiece — Lysistrata— remains a crowd favorite. Fed up with never-ending war, the Greek and Spartan women form a radical plan to end the conflict: a sex strike! The play follows the women's unwavering commitment to their cause, the men's increasingly comical desperation, and the eventual negotiations for peace. How successful are negotiations? Join us for the answer!
Aristophanes, a political satirist, used laughter to highlight the follies of society from the dangerous obsession with war, to the Greek culture itself. Lysistrata is a bawdy comedy “without peer in the history of theatre” (Goodreads).
