Riordan Mansion Special Evening Lecture and Fundraiser: Dock Marston River Addiction presented by Tom Martin
Please join local author and historian Tom Martin as he presents his new book, Dock Marston: Grand Canyon’s Colorado River Running Historian, Vol 1. After Norm Nevills guided Otis “Dock” Marston through the Grand Canyon by boat in 1942, Marston became entranced and addicted to Colorado River running. Backed by the Huntington Library, Marston spared no horses in his quest to capture all the river history he possibly could. After Nevills died in 1949, Dock kept right on running rivers and documenting how the National Park Service set the foundation for river regulations in the 1940s and ‘50s. By 1960 when Dock participated in the jet boat uprun of the Grand Canyon, he was well on his way to becoming the foremost historian of Colorado River running.
Tom Martin has been getting blisters on his feet and hopelessly lost while hiking in the Grand Canyon from river rafting trips for over fifty years. He has authored Day Hikes From The River, Big Water Little Boats, and Guide To The Colorado River In The Grand Canyon. He edited Otis “Dock” Marston’s book on the first 100 river runners in the Grand Canyon, titled From Powell To Power. This presentation is a fundraiser for the Riordan Mansion. A number of Vishnu Temple Press books, including Dock Marston, will be available for sale with all proceeds donated to the Riordan Action Network to support education and preservation at Riordan Mansion State Historic Park.
