The Power of Blood: Mexico's Casta Paintings Exhibition Opening

The Martin-Springer Institute hosts the inaugural event of the Castas Exhibition at NAU, unveiling prints of colonial era Casta paintings, presented with music from historical and present-day Mexico and spoken reflections by Institute students and faculty. Musical traditions that will be represented include folkloric with guitar, Spanish Renaissance, Nahuatl Indigenous music, and Mexican barbershop.

This project aims at reproducing, at least partially, one of the multiple collections of Casta paintings currently owned by and permanently exhibited at the Museo de Historia Mexicana (Mexican History Museum) in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. About 12 photographic reproductions would be part of an exhibit (mounted at Riles 3rd floor) that includes educational text panels (in English and Spanish) on the meaning and historical context of the casta paintings. This project is based on engagement with a select but diverse group of students who would learn and research about the topic, iconography, and meanings associated with the paintings.
