Tribal Officer, Suspect Killed In Eastern AZ Shooting

AZ Central

Authorities say a tribal police officer and a shooting suspect were killed in eastern Arizona after the officer responded to reports of gunfire near a casino.

The Navajo County Sheriff's Office says David Kellywood with the White Mountain Apache Tribe was called to a site hear the Hon-Dah Resort Casino south of Pinetop-Lakeside this morning. Kellywood located the suspect and the two engaged in what was described as a "violent" physical altercation during which officer Kellywood was shot. A second officer arrived and shot the male suspect. Both Kellywood and the shooting suspect were taken to a local hospital where they died of their injuries. This is the 11th officer-involved shooting in Arizona so far this year.
