Employees Face Uncertain Two Weeks As Businesses Close Down

Melissa Sevigny

The new restrictions on businesses in Flagstaff to slow the spread of COVID-19 have left employees facing an uncertain two weeks. KNAU’s Melissa Sevigny reports.

Many local restaurants are moving to limited menus and take out only, in keeping with the City of Flagstaff’s new restrictions. That means reduced staff sizes and reduced paychecks for many employees.

But Anthony Munoz says he’s trying not to worry. He works four jobs, including as a bartender at Rendezvous. "The past few months I definitely took precautions and just saved and saved and saved. I didn’t want to spend it for the doomsday, you know? It was for other stuff. But I am prepared, and I’m thankful that I am."

Mountain Sports, which voluntarily closed its doors, will continue to pay employees for their scheduled shifts. Amber Meyer, who works there part time, says she’s grateful for that. "My kids are not in school, obviously, so that’s really nice I’ll be able to be home and do things with them. We’re just planning on spending a lot of time outside and doing some new hikes."

Not all businesses can afford to pay their employees during the closures and restrictions, which will last through April 1. Employees dependent on tips will be particularly hard hit.

Melissa joined KNAU's team in 2015 to report on science, health, and the environment. Her work has appeared nationally on NPR and been featured on Science Friday. She grew up in Tucson, Arizona, where she fell in love with the ecology and geology of the Sonoran desert.
