Tourist Attractions Begin To Reopen In Northern Arizona

Meteor Crater

Several tourist attractions and outdoor recreation sites in Northern Arizona plan to reopen in the coming week as restrictions loosen during the coronavirus pandemic.  KNAU’s Melissa Sevigny reports.

The Grand Canyon’s South Rim reopens today with access to certain viewpoints from the south entrance. Hiking trails and commercial services in the park remain closed, and overnight accommodations are not available. Meteor Crater near Winslow will reopen to the public on Thursday, with outdoor dining only offered by its restaurant. Meanwhile, certain campgrounds on the Coconino National Forest will reopen next week in the Flagstaff, Sedona, and Oak Creek areas. A campfire and charcoal ban remains in effect. Other Northern Arizona attractions are closed to visitors until further notice to protect public health, including Fossil Creek, Arizona Snowbowl, Sunset Crater, Wupatki, Walnut Canyon, Petrified Forest, Havasupai, and all sites on the Navajo Nation.

Melissa joined KNAU's team in 2015 to report on science, health, and the environment. Her work has appeared nationally on NPR and been featured on Science Friday. She grew up in Tucson, Arizona, where she fell in love with the ecology and geology of the Sonoran desert.
