Some AZ Cities Won't Enforce Governor Ducey's Statewide Curfew Without Cause

Law enforcement in some Arizona cities say they won't enforce Governor Doug Ducey's newly imposed daily curfew unless there is cause.

Sheriff's departments in Cochise and Yuma counties, as well as the Holbrook and Williams Police Departments, among others, said yesterday that while they respect the Office of the Governor, they haven't seen any violence in their communities related to the ongoing protests across the country calling for justice in the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. They say enforcing a curfew could have negative effects on their communities.

Authorities in some areas are telling residents the curfew order would only be enforced in response to specific problems. The Williams Police Department posted on the agency's Facebook page, "Businesses can remain open and we will not force people to stay in after 8:00 p.m. if you have a legitimate reason to be out. Our wonderful community of Williams thankfully has had no issues with riots, fights, fires, etc., however, if issues do arise, the Williams PD has been given the authority to enforce the curfew."
