TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Sheriff’s deputies are going door to door in foothill neighborhoods overlooking Tucson, Arizona, calling on residents of nearly 300 homes to evacuate as firefighters burn away excess brush in the path of a wildfire.
Officials say the tactic is intended to eliminate potential fuel so firefighters can keep the flames from reaching homes south of Coronado National Forest. The fire had blackened around 4,700 acres and was only 10% contained. No structures have been burned. Most of the western U.S. currently is experiencing extreme dryness or drought, creating challenging conditions for wildfire season,
